Inuit carving Eskimo Hunter Kayak Circa:1890 J.Bartleman Hudsons Bay Company

Inuit carving Eskimo Hunter Kayak
c:1890 J.Bartleman HBC

Rarely does one encounter an original folk art item that is captivating in its imagery to the point where an observer is overwhelmingly drawn to the piece again and again. Although crude in true folk art fashion, this is a rare example of important art whereas the artist/carver reflects a deep spiritual essence into a manifest vision. A unique actually traded Inuit / HBC artifact far outside of the realm of mass produced facsimiles.

It is obvious why this was a treasured possession of John Bartleman during his entire tenure as manager, fur trader, and Chief Factor of The Hudson’s Bay Company, Mackenzie - Keewatin from 1913-1933.

Length: 14.12 inches
Width at kayak top center: 1.94 inches
Kayak Height at center: 1.12 inches
Height to Eskimo parka top: 3.36 inches
Eskimo width: 2.24 inches
Eskimo height: 3.12 inches
Paddle length: 8.24 inches

Note; approx. .5 inch missing from one paddle end, crude 19th century repair on one inch of the cockpit coaming, a fracture on the inner left eskimo forearm which is not obvious, and only one original sinew lashing remains on the deck of the Kayak.

A unique, important, and rare Inuit 19th century carving that was actually taken in trade by John Bartleman early in his career. This artifact will prove to be an exceptional investment for it’s new owner.
